I said in yesterday's post that I wanted to tell you about my most infamous lobster story, but I've just been reminded by Sara in Le Petite Village about my paucity of tea-making skills.  (At this point you might say, why do you always mention Sara in your posts?  Mainly because my routine is -- 1) Get up 2) Pee 3) Make French Press      4) Read expat blogs 5) Write on my own expat blog 6) Go about the rest of my day -- so since I read before I write, then it stands to reason that when I read about something I think -- Ohhhh!!! I should write about that -- or Oh that reminds me!  See?  Don't judge me.)

In any case, I promise I will tell you the lobster story, but it will have to wait for another day, because, this morning I want to talk about tea.  Besides, now you will come back right? 

Ok. So. Here goes.

I love tea.  I have a cabinet full of tea.  I am currently in New Orleans and cannot show you my cabinet of tea (back in Austin), otherwise I would take a picture and prove to you that I have a deep and abiding obsession for tea.  I have tea for cramps, tea for the afternoon, tea for an upset stomach, tea for a cold, tea for calming, tea for energizing, tea for nighttime, tea for anytime...you get my drift.  I used to grow my own Chamomile for tea...seriously, I heart tea. 

All of that said, I drink tea like a cretin -- according to the folks across the pond.  In America, no one notices my complete and utter blundering of the English tea custom.  It's like when you grow up slurping soup at home because everyone slurps soup at home, and then you go to your fancy boyfriend's parent's house and everything is quiet and then the soup is served and then you slurp and EVERYONE turns and looks your direction?  And you look back like "What?  Isn't this how you eat soup?" and then it dawns on you "Oh...no...I've breached some horrible etiquette"  and then you turn red and flustered and spill soup trying not to slurp it...?  This is how I feel about the way I drink tea.

So here's how the English drink it (I'm giving you this knowledge from the internet, so don't get mad at me if I'm not entirely accurate)

1. First boil water in a Kettle, bring the water to boil.
2. Pour this boiled water in a tea pot, just a little to keep the cup hot, swirl it around and throw it away.
3. Bring back the kettle and resume the boiling again.
4. Place the Earl Grey tea bags (or loose tea leaves) in the tea pot and pour the boiled water on top of this tea pot.
5. Let the tea brew for two to three minutes and then drink this tea.

So elegant. So English.
Furthermore -- there are all of these mechanisms to ensure the proper temperature of your tea.  Like tea cozies and mug cozies all knitted by little English grannies.

Mug cozy.
Here is how I drink tea:

1. Get giant mug
2. Boil water on stove
3. Grab tea bag and put in giant mug
4. Pour boiling water over tea bag
5. Wait until tea is luke-warm (aka, improper temperature) and then drink it -- while tea bag is still in mug....(yes, friends, the American cretin in me)
So crude. So American.

Don't worry about it! Within a couple of months of living in London, you'll be sipping tea like the queen

If it makes you feel any better - I'll let you in on a secret.

I put milk in my mug BEFORE adding the hot water and tea bag!

ohhh-ahhh. Sacrilegious!

But that's because I'm from that country full of convicts and not the motherland you see.

Off for a nice cuppa then ......
